ROSS WOODWIND SPECIALISTS
Your Ross gouging machine is designed and constructed from materials that should last a lifetime. With that in mind, there will come a time when your machine will need maintenance. The blade of your machine can gouge upwards of 1,000 pieces of cane until it needs to be re-ground and sharpened. A sharp blade will produce consistently good reeds. Dull blades will cause your reeds to lose pitch, stability, projection and cause your tip openings to become "springy." If this is the case with your reeds, you may want to schedule a service for your machine.
Ross gouging machine blades are through-hardened and can be reground many times before needing to be discarded. Servicing your machine includes regrinding your blade to new condition, clean/lube all parts, aligning the bed, setup and reed test. Basic service is $120.
After heavy use for many years, the brass guide may wear a flat spot. This will create a discrepancy between the blade and guide and will cause the blade to be too exposed in specific spots, leading to inconsistent measurements and difficulty setting up the machine. If the flat spot is caught early, the guide might be able to be recut to new condition and will give the user many more years of trouble-free use. This fee is $80.
If there isn't enough material on the guide left to recut, a new carriage will be needed. New carriages are $300 and will likely take several weeks to make.
Other, less common issues may arise. I'm here to help with these. If a spring or cane-clip breaks, I'm happy to repair/replace those as part of the standard service at no additional cost.
