ROSS WOODWIND SPECIALISTS
Dr. Dan Ross began making gouging machines in 1984 with the intention of providing a consistent machine with a repeatable blade curve that was affordable to the average oboist. He designed a blade grinder to be able to accurately duplicate the same curve time and time again. He received design help for his machines from his good friend and legendary loudspeaker designer Paul Klipsch, as well as a lifelong partnership /friendship with Richard Killmer to help refine the gouge. His machines quickly became standard place in oboe sections in every major orchestra in the US and Canada. Many of his earliest machines are still in use today!
Dan lived in Jonesboro, Arkansas where he enjoyed 49 years of teaching oboe at Arkansas State University and over 20 years as principal oboe of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.
Philip Ross is currently Associate Principal Oboe in the St. Louis Symphony. Philip has been making English horn bocals since 2004, and began making gouging machines alongside Dan in 2015. He still follows Dan's "recipe" for producing gouging machine parts, and continues to refine the machine to meet the needs of today's oboists.
